Papa ai presidenti di Bulgaria e Macedonia: l'Europa resti fedele alle sue radici cristiane se vuole un futuro di libertà, pace e giustizia per tutti

Le celebrazioni in onore dei Santi Cirillo e Metodio, secondo il calendario giuliano, sono state l’occasione stamani della visita a Benedetto XVI di due delegazioni giunte dalla Bulgaria e dalla Macedonia, in pellegrinaggio alla Tomba di San Cirillo, conservata presso la Basilica romana di San Clemente. Le due delegazioni, guidate dai presidenti dei due Paesi, sono state ricevute in due diverse udienze. Ce ne parla Sergio Centofanti.

Il Papa, ricevendo le due delegazioni guidate dal presidente bulgaro Georgi Parvanov e dal presidente macedone Gjeorge Ivanov, ha ricordato “l’opera evangelica e sociale” dei due compatroni d’Europa, vissuti nel nono secolo e la cui “eredità spirituale ha segnato la vita dei popoli slavi; il loro esempio – ha aggiunto il Pontefice – ha sostenuto la testimonianza e la fedeltà di innumerevoli cristiani che, lungo i secoli, hanno consacrato la loro esistenza alla diffusione del messaggio di salvezza, lavorando nello stesso tempo alla costruzione di una società giusta e solidale”. Il Papa ha quindi auspicato che il vecchio continente “resti fedele alle sue radici cristiane”. “I valori della solidarietà e della giustizia, della libertà e della pace, oggi costantemente riaffermati - ha sottolineato Benedetto XVI - trovano infatti ancora più forza e solidità nell’insegnamento eterno di Cristo, tradotto nella vita dei suoi discepoli di tutti i tempi”. La sfida che devono oggi affrontare i cristiani – ha proseguito – è proprio quella di "conservare il patrimonio di ideali e valori” che santi come Cirillo e Metodio hanno trasmesso con la parola e le opere. “Questo – ha concluso - è il più prezioso contributo che i cristiani possono offrire per la costruzione di una Europa del terzo millennio, che aspiri a un futuro di progresso, giustizia e pace per tutti”.

Mr President
Honourable Members of the Delegation
Venerable Brothers of the Orthodox Church and of the Catholic Church!

I am happy to welcome you again this year on the liturgical memorial of Saints Cyril and Methodius. I am pleased that during your visit to pay homage to the Co-Patrons of Europe you have expressed the desire to meet with me, an occurrence that has already become a tradition. I thank you for this courteous gesture and I extend to each one of you my heart-felt welcome and my appreciation for the sentiments that you bring to this gathering. I express a special welcome to the authorities and to all the population of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. I also send particular greetings to the faithful and to those who have pastoral responsibilities in your country. I avail myself of the occasion to express the sentiments of esteem and friendship that unite the Holy See to the beloved Macedonian people.

The annual celebration of the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, teachers of the faith and apostles of the Slavonic peoples, invites all of us who are united by the one faith in Jesus Christ, to contemplate their heroic evangelical witness. At the same time we are challenged to conserve the patrimony of ideals and values that they have transmitted by word and deed. In fact this is the most precious contribution that Christians can offer to the construction of a Europe of the third millennium, which aspires to a future of progress, justice and peace for all.

Your beloved homeland, marked by the influence of these two great saints, seeks to become more and more a place of peaceful encounter and dialogue between the country’s many social and religious spheres. My hope, which I renew today with all my heart, is that you may continue to progress on this path. As I invoke divine protection upon the authorities of your nation, to whom I renew the closeness of the Apostolic See, I wish to assure you of my personal esteem and friendship.

Once again I extend my warm good wishes to each one of you on this Feast-day and offer fervent prayers to the Lord both for you who are present here today and for all the Macedonian people.

AU PRÉSIDENT, AUX MEMBRES DE LA DÉLÉGATION GOUVERNEMENTALE
ET AUX REPRÉSENTANTS DE L'ÉGLISE ORTHODOXE
ET DE L'ÉGLISE CATHOLIQUE DE BULGARIE

Il m’est particulièrement agréable d’adresser à chacun de vous mes salutations les plus cordiales, en cette rencontre qui se déroule à l’occasion de la fête annuelle des saints Cyrille et Méthode. En cette heureuse circonstance, je voudrais renouveler mes sentiments d’amitié à l’égard du bien-aimé peuple bulgare, dont les racines spirituelles – comme en témoigne encore votre visite de ce jour – plongent dans la prédication des Saints co-Patrons de l’Europe. Je salue chacun de vous avec déférence, et j’étends ces sentiments aux Autorités et au peuple bulgare tout entier, ainsi qu’aux responsables et aux fidèles de l’Église orthodoxe et de l’Église catholique présents sur votre terre bien-aimée. 

Cette rencontre nous offre l’opportunité de penser à nouveau à l’œuvre évangélique et sociale réalisée par ces deux insignes témoins de l’Évangile que furent les saints Cyrille et Méthode. Leur héritage spirituel a marqué la vie des peuples slaves ; leur exemple a soutenu le témoignage et la fidélité d’innombrables chrétiens qui, au long des siècles, ont consacré leur existence à la diffusion du message du salut, œuvrant en même temps à la construction d’une société juste et solidaire. Puisse leur témoignage spirituel demeurer vivant dans votre Nation pour que la Bulgarie elle aussi, puisant à cette source de lumière et d’espérance, contribue efficacement à construire une Europe qui demeure fidèle à ses racines chrétiennes. Les valeurs de solidarité et de justice, de liberté et de paix, aujourd’hui constamment réaffirmées, trouvent en effet encore plus de force et de solidité dans l’enseignement éternel du Christ, traduit dans la vie de ses disciples de tous les temps.

Ce sont là les sentiments que je voudrais manifester à chacun d’entre vous, vous assurant de mon estime et de ma proximité spirituelle. Soyez sûrs aussi que le Saint-Siège continue à suivre avec sympathie le cheminement de votre Nation et l’engagement de tous ceux qui travaillent pour son bien. De grand cœur, sur chacun de vous, j’invoque l’abondance des Bénédictions divines.
