LA CHIESA E’ IMPEGNATA IN PRIMA LINEA PER LA PACE NEL SUDAN: COSI’, BENEDETTO XVI NEL DISCORSO AL CARDINALE ZUBEIR WAKO, ARCIVESCOVO DI KHARTOUM, RICEVUTO STAMANI IN VATICANO. E PER LA MARTORIATA REGIONE DEL DARFUR, IL PAPA CHIEDE UN MAGGIORE IMPEGNO DELLA COMUNITA’ INTERNAZIONALE 

La Chiesa sente il dovere di contribuire al processo di perdono e ricostruzione nazionale nel Sudan. E’ quanto affermato da Benedetto XVI, che stamani ha ricevuto in Vaticano il cardinale Gabriel Zubeir Wako, arcivescovo di Khartoum con alcuni presuli sudanesi. Il Papa ha anche chiesto un maggiore impegno internazionale per alleviare le sofferenze della popolazione della martoriata regione sudanese del Darfur. (THE CESSATION OF THE CIVIL WAR…)

“La fine della guerra civile e l’approvazione di una nuova Costituzione – ha rilevato il Pontefice - hanno portato speranza nella popolazione sudanese a lungo segnata dalla sofferenza”. Per questo, ha sottolineato il Papa, “nonostante gli ostacoli sulla via della riconciliazione, come la tragica morte” del vicepresidente John Garang, “esiste ora un’opportunità senza precedenti”. In tale contesto, ha affermato, la Chiesa sente il dovere “di contribuire significativamente al processo di perdono e ricostruzione nazionale”. Sebbene siano una minoranza, ha detto ancora, “i cattolici hanno molto da offrire attraverso il dialogo interreligioso e il sostegno dei servizi sociali di cui si sente grande bisogno”.

 Di qui l’incoraggiamento del Papa ai vescovi sudanesi, affinché “prendano le iniziative necessarie per realizzare in modi diversi la presenza di Cristo”. Benedetto XVI ha poi rivolto l’attenzione agli “orrori” nella regione sudanese del Darfur. Il Papa ha messo l’accento sulla “necessità di una maggiore risolutezza internazionale per garantire la sicurezza e i diritti umani basilari per la popolazione”. Ha quindi “aggiunto la sua voce a quella di coloro che soffrono nel Darfur” ed ha garantito che, assieme al nunzio a Khartoum, la Santa Sede “continuerà a fare il possibile per mettere fine al ciclo di violenze e miseria”

Your Eminence,

Brother Bishops,

Distinguished Visitors,

It gives me great satisfaction to welcome you to the Vatican and through you to send heartfelt greetings to the people of your country. I very much appreciate the sentiments which have prompted your visit, and I wish to reassure you of my prayers and deep concern for the peaceful development of civil and ecclesial life in your nation.

The cessation of the civil war and the enactment of a new Constitution have brought hope to the long suffering people of Sudan. While there have been setbacks along the path of reconciliation, not least the tragic death of John Garang, there now exists an unprecedented opportunity and indeed duty for the Church to contribute significantly to the process of forgiveness and national reconstruction. Though a minority, Catholics have much to offer through inter-religious dialogue as well as the provision of greatly needed social services. I encourage you therefore to take the necessary initiatives to realize Christ’s healing presence in these ways.

The horror of events unfolding in Darfur, to which my beloved predecessor Pope John Paul II referred on many occasions, points to the need for a stronger international resolve to ensure security and basic human rights. Today, I add my voice to the cry of the suffering and assure you that the Holy See, together with the Apostolic Nuncio in Khartoum, will continue to do everything possible to end the cycle of violence and misery.
