IL MONDO DI OGGI HA BISOGNO DELLA TESTIMONIANZA COMUNE E CONVINCENTE DEI DISCEPOLI DI CRISTO: COSI’ IL PAPA STAMANE NELL’INCONTRO CON UNA DELEGAZIONE ECUMENICA DELLA FINLANDIA NEL SECONDO GIORNO DELLA SETTIMANA DI PREGHIERA PER L’UNITA’ DEI CRISTIANI  

“Lo Spirito Santo è il vero protagonista dell’impegno ecumenico”: è quanto ha detto Benedetto XVI ricevendo oggi una delegazione ecumenica della Finlandia, giunta a Roma per il suo tradizionale pellegrinaggio nella Festa di Sant’Enrico, patrono del Paese nordico. L’incontro avviene in coincidenza con la Settimana di preghiera per l’unità dei cristiani, che si svolge da ieri sul tema “Fa udire i sordi e fa parlare i muti”. Il servizio di Sergio Centofanti.

L’incontro della delegazione ecumenica finlandese con il Papa è ormai diventato tradizionale e mostra i buoni rapporti che esistono tra cattolici e luterani della Finlandia. Anzi – ha precisato Benedetto XVI – le relazioni tra i cristiani in questo Paese “si sono sviluppate in un modo che dà molta speranza per il futuro dell’ecumenismo”.  Qui i discepoli di Cristo “pregano e lavorano insieme, offrendo una testimonianza pubblica comune” delle verità del Vangelo, testimonianza “convincente” che “gli uomini e le donne cercano e hanno bisogno di sentire”. “Da parte dei cristiani – ha sottolineato il Papa – questo richiede coraggio” e la consapevolezza che “il farsi più vicini a Cristo, convertendoci alla sua verità e al suo amore, ci avvicina di più gli uni agli altri”. Proprio il tema della Settimana di preghiera – ha proseguito il Pontefice – “mostra come Gesù liberi tutti noi dalla sordità spirituale, rendendoci capaci di ascoltare la sua parola salvifica e di proclamarla agli altri”.  

Il Papa ricorda che con la firma, nel 1999, della Dichiarazione congiunta sulla Dottrina della giustificazione, luterani e cattolici hanno accorciato in modo “considerevole” le distanze teologiche, anche se resta da compiere “ulteriore lavoro”. E’ comunque “incoraggiante” – nota – che il dialogo luterano-cattolico in Finlandia e Svezia stia esaminando la questione della “Giustificazione nella vita della Chiesa”.   Infatti – ha affermato - dietro all’ “affievolirsi del tema della giustificazione e del perdono dei peccati sta in definitiva un indebolimento del nostro rapporto con Dio. Per questo, il nostro primo compito sarà forse quello di riscoprire in modo nuovo il Dio vivente nella nostra vita, nel nostro tempo e nella nostra società”.  

Benedetto XVI, infine, ricordando che “lo Spirito Santo è il vero protagonista dell’impegno ecumenico”, ha auspicato che i colloqui in corso possano contribuire “effettivamente alla ricerca della piena e visibile unità della Chiesa, offrendo allo stesso tempo una risposta sempre più chiara alle questioni fondamentali che interessano la vita e la società”.

DISCORSO DEL PAPA AD UNA DELEGAZIONE ECUMENICA DELLA FINLANDIA

Dear Bishops Peura and Wróbel,
Distinguished Friends,

With joy I welcome you, the members of the ecumenical delegation from Finland, as you visit Rome on the occasion of the feast of Saint Henrik, Patron of your nation.

Your presence here coincides with this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme of the week - "he makes the deaf hear and the mute speak" - (Mk 7:37), illustrates how Jesus frees all of us from spiritual deafness, enabling us to hear his saving word and to proclaim it to others. This charge of common witness in word and deed nurtures our ecumenical journey. In drawing us closer to Christ, converting us to his truth and love, it draws us closer to one another.

In recent times relations between Christians in Finland have developed in a way that offers much hope for the future of ecumenism. Readily they pray and work together, bearing common public witness to the word of God. It is precisely this convincing testimony to the guiding and saving truths of the Gospel that all men and women seek or need to hear. On the part of Christians this demands courage. Indeed, as I suggested at the Ecumenical Vespers during my visit to Bavaria, behind any "weakening of the theme of justification and of forgiveness of sins is ultimately a weakening of the theme of our relationship with God. In this sense our first task will perhaps be to rediscover in a new way the living God present in our lives, in our time, and in our society."

In the Joint Declaration on Justification, Lutherans and Catholics have covered a considerable distance theologically. Further work remains and so it is encouraging that the Nordic Lutheran-Catholic dialogue in Finland and Sweden is examining the topic "Justification in the Life of the Church." I hope and pray that these conversations will effectively contribute to the quest for full and visible unity of the Church, while at the same time offering an ever clearer response to the fundamental questions affecting life and society.

Confident in the knowledge that the Holy Spirit is the real protagonist of the ecumenical endeavour (cf. Unitatis Redintegratio 1; 4), let us continue to pray and work for the building of closer bonds of love and cooperation between Lutherans and Catholics in Finland. Upon you and all the beloved people of Finland I invoke God’s abundant blessings of peace and joy.
