Siate testimoni della speranza, forti della fede in Cristo Risorto: l’esortazione di Benedetto XVI all’associazione caritativa statunitense Papal Foundation in udienza in Vaticano

La carità della Chiesa trova nella Risurrezione di Cristo la sua fonte primaria: è quanto sottolineato da Benedetto XVI nell’udienza di stamani ai membri della Papal Foundation, associazione caritativa statunitense fondata nel 1990 dal cardinale John Krol. L’indirizzo d’omaggio al Papa è stato rivolto dal cardinale Anthony Bevilacqua, arcivescovo emerito di Filadelfia e chairman della Fondazione. Il servizio di Alessandro Gisotti:

La fede nel Cristo Risorto ci aiuti ad “essere testimoni della speranza nel mondo di oggi”: è l’invito di Benedetto XVI ai membri dell’associazione caritativa statunitense Papal Foundation.

“La vera fonte della carità della Chiesa”, ha aggiunto, si trova “nella fede incrollabile in Dio che ha vinto definitivamente il peccato e la morte”. Il Papa ha sottolineato che, come per i discepoli, anche in noi “l’incontro con Cristo Risorto trasforma la tristezza in gioia, la delusione in speranza”. Un incontro con Gesù che ci spinge ad “alleviare le sofferenze dei poveri e dei deboli”.

Il Papa ha quindi ringraziato la Papal Foundation per il generoso contributo a sostegno del suo ministero apostolico ed ha assicurato le sue preghiere affinché la Fondazione possa moltiplicare le proprie opere benefiche. Dal canto suo, il cardinale Anthony Bevilacqua ha informato il Santo Padre dell’impegno profuso dalla Papal Foundation nell’ultimo anno. Molti dei progetti approvati, per una cifra di oltre 7,5 milioni di dollari, hanno finanziato borse di studio per sacerdoti e laici, studenti in istituti e università pontificie.
 
Nel corso dell’incontro è stata offerta a Benedetto XVI una riproduzione a dimensioni originali della Saint John’s Bible, la Bibbia realizzata nell’VIII secolo dai benedettini di un’abbazia tra l’Inghilterra e la Scozia, oggi scomparsa. Un dono particolarmente gradito dal Papa, ha confidato il cardinale Theodore Edgar McCarrick, arcivescovo emerito di Washington durante una conferenza alla Sala Stampa vaticana. Si tratta, è stato spiegato, della prima Bibbia scritta a mano negli ultimi 500 anni. La realizzazione di questa Bibbia miniata, in più volumi, ha richiesto oltre dieci anni di lavoro.

Dear Friends in Christ,

I extend a heartfelt welcome to you, the representatives of the Papal Foundation, as we continue to celebrate our Lord’s glorious resurrection during this blessed Easter Season.

"The Lord has risen indeed!" This was the response of the Eleven after the disciples from Emmaus, who recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, rushed to join them in Jerusalem (cf. Lk 24:33-40). Their encounter with the Risen Lord turned their sorrow into joy, their disappointment into hope. Their testimony of faith instils in us the firm conviction that Christ lives in our midst, bestowing the gifts that empower us to be messengers of hope in the world today. The very source of the Church’s service of love, as she strives to alleviate the suffering of the poor and weak, can be found in her unwavering faith that the Lord has definitively conquered sin and death; and that in serving her brothers and sisters, she serves the Lord himself until he comes again in glory (cf. Mt 25:31-46; Deus Caritas Est, 19).

Dear friends, I am pleased to have this occasion to express my gratitude for the generous support the Papal Foundation offers through aid projects and scholarships which assist me in carrying out my Apostolic Ministry to the universal Church. I ask for your prayers, and I assure you of my own. May your good works continue to multiply, filling our brothers and sisters with the sure hope that Jesus never ceases to pour out his life for us in the sacraments so that we may provide for the material and spiritual needs of the whole human family (cf. Deus Caritas Est, 25).

Commending you and your loved ones to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of joy and peace in the Risen Savior.
